Choosing where to stay can make all the difference, and, with venues spread across the city centre, finding a hotel that offers both easy access and a quieter place to unwind is key. Theatre shows on in Edinburgh from April to June 2026

Edinburgh’s main theatres and performance venues are all within easy reach of the city centre, each offering a slightly different experience. Here’s a break down of our favourite venues, alongside some of our top shows to reserve tickets for. Don’t wait too long, some of them are selling out fast!

Usher Hall

Built in 1914, the Usher Hall is one of Edinburgh’s most iconic venues and sits halfway up central Lothian Road. Its spring programme is usually packed full of orchestral concerts, touring musicians and special talks, making it a popular choice for an elegant evening out.

A nostalgic but still high-quality live show, ideal for a weekend trip.

An Audience with Hamza Yassin & Helen Sharman
12 April 2026
The headline ‘act’ for the 2026 Edinburgh Science Festival, Wildlife cameraman Hamza Yassin and first British astronaut Helen Sharman join forces to bring Edinburgh visitors and locals something a bit different, combining storytelling and science.

Alfie Boe
18 April 2026
A more classical vocal performance, popular with a dressed-up crowd, Edinburgh is part of Boe’s UK tour celebrating his most iconic hits. Expect fan favourites and new material from his highly anticipated upcoming album, ‘Facing Myself’.

25 April 2026
One of the most in-demand nights of the season, this man needs no introduction. Be quick, this show is selling fast and is definitely worth planning a stay around.

2 May 2026
After 64 years of performing, Brooks is now on her ‘Long Farewell Tour’. Joined by her band, she’ll be performing all the classics, alongside new material from the new album.

Red Hot Chilli Pipers
9 May 2026
If this is your first time in Edinburgh (or Scotland), you won’t want to miss this. Alongside one of Scotland’s favourite bagpipe bands, Ally the Piper will be flying in from the USA (following a celebrated career and bagpipe world champion.)

Another Scottish classic, this Scottish contemporary Celtic music band are known for their high-energy blend of bagpipes, fiddles, and accordions.

STAYING TIP:
For Usher Hall, the West End is the most convenient area, with several hotels within walking distance. The Bonham is just a 13-minute walk away, making it a popular choice for concert evenings where you don’t want to rely on transport afterwards.

Edinburgh Festival Theatre

Located on Nicolson Street, the Festival Theatre is known for its large-scale productions.Here, you can expect a mix of touring musicals, ballet, opera and drama throughout spring, often including well-known West End titles and international performances.

A lively stage adaptation of the cult Scottish comedy, expect a fun, local crowd and a less formal theatre atmosphere.

Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes
14 – 18 April 2026
One of the standout productions of the season, a visually rich ballet with strong reviews across the UK.

The Ballad of Johnny and June
28 April – 2 May 2026
A musical telling the story of Johnny Cash and June Carter, a good pick if you’re after something narrative-driven with live music.

Lost in Music, One Night at the Disco
17 May 2026
A lighter, high-energy show, full of iconic hits from Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Earth, Wind & Fire, Chic, Sister Sledge.

An evening with Louis Theroux
22 May 2026
Particularly well timed if you’ve just finished Theroux’s newest ‘Manosphere’ documentary on Netflix. During this conversation, the journalist will revisit the biggest pieces that shaped his career, alongside the interviews the environments that challenged him to his limit.

Ballet Black at 25
19 June 2026
Not your average ballet performance. A one-night piece sharing original stories with dancers from around the world, dressed in matching grey costumes and headscarves.

The Karate Kid, The Musical
23 – 27 June 2026
A newer touring production, likely to appeal if you’re planning a theatre trip with a nostalgic edge.

STAYING TIP:
If you’re seeing a show at the Festival Theatre, you could stay nearby in the Southside, but many visitors prefer to base themselves in a more central part of town and travel down. The West End, where The Bonham is located, offers a calmer setting while still being an easy taxi ride away.

Bus services and frequent and convenient in Edinburgh, and there are also several buses that leave from particularly close to the Bonham and stop almost right outside the Festival Theatre. Look for timetables for the No. 30, 37, 47, 3, 31, and 33.

Edinburgh Playhouse

Located at the very top of Leith walk (just outside the back of the St James Quarter) The Playhouse is Edinburgh’s home for large-scale touring musicals and well-known productions. If you’re planning a classic theatre break, this is often where your headline show will be.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical
14 – 18 April 2026
Based on the 1994 film about three friends on a drag show journey across the Australian outback, expect big, colourful, high-energy theatre. This is a popular choice for group trips.

Strictly Come Dancing, The Professionals
1 May 2026
The perfect girl’s night out? Continuing from its TV success, this is a one-night event that tends to sell quickly.

Sunny Afternoon
5 – 9 May 2026
A strong musical centred around the story of The Kinks.  The show follows their journey from working-class brothers in North London to international fame, with plenty of roaring 60’s hits.

Waitress
12 – 16 May 2026
Based on the 2007 movie and a consistent crowd favourite, this musical tells the story of waitress Jenna, an expert pie-maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and rocky marriage.

The Bodyguard
18 – 23 May 2026
One of the most recognisable touring shows (Whitney Houston fans assemble), often paired with a full night out on the town! We recommend combining it with cocktails at The Bonham Bar.

2:22 A Ghost Story
25 – 30 May 2026
A supernatural thriller, but on the stage!  More intimate and suspense-driven, this show centres around a Professor (and sceptic who) investigates three frightening, and seemingly supernatural cases.

STAYING TIP:
If you’re visiting the Playhouse, staying in the New Town or east end, with options like The Balmoral Hotel and Courtyard by Marriot will put you closest. However, if you’re planning to see multiple shows or explore the city more widely, staying centrally in the West End, at somewhere like The Bonham, still keeps everything within easy reach.

Getting to Edinburgh’s main theatres from the West End

One of the advantages of staying in the West End is how well connected it is:

  • Usher Hall, around 5-10 minutes short walk.
  • Festival Theatre, around 10–15 minutes by taxi. 32-minute walk.
  • Edinburgh Playhouse, around 10 minutes by taxi, 30-minute walk, or 20-minute bus/tram.
  • King’s Theatre, around 5 minutes by taxi, 20-minute walk, 15 minutes by bus.
